General Info

The Departament of Chemical Technology  of Medical Agents and later on the Chair of Chemical Technology of Medical Agents were established in1948 within the structure of the Faculty of Pharmacy at the Medical University of Lublin. Initially the Department was facing hard working conditions. A small room for practical classes led the necessity of continuing  the classes for two semesters. There was a lack of the crucial equipment such as chemical instruments, laboratory glassware, chemicals or even handbooks.  In 1957 the Department was relocated to a new building in 6 Staszica St.
Until 1972 the scientific researches in the Department were held in two directions: synthesis of semi-products for pharmaceutical industry. The research was concentrated on mechanisms of  oxidation of pyridine homologs  to their appropriate formyl derivatives and pirydine carboxylic acids and nitration of lower normal paraffins to their appropriate nitro compounds with their reduction to amino alcohols. There were also studies conducted regarding a synthesis of new medicines – derivatives of imidazoline and benzimidazole with a potential pharmacological activity (psychotropic and antihistamine drugs).  In that time there was a two-part script developed for the purpose of the practical classes entitled Introduction to the Practical Synthesis and Technology of Drugs as well as the published by PZWL handbook Synthesis and Technology of Drugs.
Since 1996  Acting Head of the Department and since 2003 the Head of the Department is Dariusz Matosiuk, Ph.D.
Since December 2010 the Department is located In a new building of the Faculty of Pharmacy in 4a Chodźki St. 
In the Department there are currently 13 employees including:

  1. academics positions: Head of the Department, 4 research associate professors , 2 assistants;
  2. 1 scientific-technical specialist;
  3. 5 technicians;
  4. 1 administrative-technical assistant .


Current Research Subjects:

In Department of Synthesis and Technology of Pharmaceutical Substances are currently investigated the following subjects:

  1. synthesis and pharmacological activity of chain and cyclic carbonyl derivatives of 1-aryl-2-aminoimidazoline;
  2. pharmacophoric models of opioid (through the MOR) and serotonergic (through the 5-HT2 receptor) activity of carbonyl derivatives of 1-arylo-2-aminoimidazoline;
  3. optimization of the lead structures of partial and full antagonists of GluR5 and GluR6 subunits of kainate receptor as potential neuroprotective drugs;
  4. search for new allosteric inhibitors of the nicotinic receptors for acetylcholine as potential anti-dependance drugs;
  5. search for new allosteric modulators of opioid and serotonin receptors as substances enhancing or reducing action of those receptors typical ligands, which could be useful as antinociceptive or antidepressive agents;
  6. modeling of the opioid (MOR, DOR, KOR), serotonergic (5-HT1A, 5-HT2A), histaminic (H3, H4) and kainate (mainly GluR5 and GluR6 subunits) receptors;
  7. modeling of the endo- and egsogenic peptide-activated G-coupled receptors (NPY, NPFF);
  8. lipophilicity measurement for heterocyclic derivatives by RP-TLC method and its correlation with pharmacological activity;.

Department of Synthesis and Chemical Technology of Pharmaceutical Substances is carrying on classes on SYNTHESIS AND TECHNOLOGY OF PHARMACEUTICAL SUBSTANCES for 4th year undergraduate pharmacy students. Classes comprise lectures (30 hours a year) and laboratories (50 hours a year), of total amount of 5 ECTS points. For 2nd and 3rd year students Department propose also the extra-curriculum courses within the specialization blocks Chemical bases of drugs action, Modern methods of drugs R&D and Heterocyclic systems nomenclature (15 h of seminars 2 ECTS points each). Every year 5-6 master thesis are done in our Department for students of the 5th year. Main teaching goal of the Department is to present students with new, modern synthetic methods of pharmaceutical substances synthesis, chemical modifications of prodrugs of natural origin as steroids, alkaloids and antibiotics, methods of the pharmaceutical substances design and development and methods of investigation and anticipation of pharmacological activity of drugs in dependence on their chemical structure.

In Department of Synthesis and Technology of Pharmaceutical Substances are currently investigated the following subjects:
- synthesis of new simple and fused heterocyclic systems based on imidazoline and imidazolidine, tetrahydro- and perhydropyrimidine, oxadiazole, triazole, triazine and triazepine structures as substances of potential activity in the Central Nervous System and in other kinds of deseases (antibacterial or antifungal and hypoglyceamic activities).
-  structural analysis by spectral methods of compounds synthesized (MS, NMR) and x-ray analysis;
- definition of the structural and electronic features of compounds synthesized, investigation of their lipophilicity and correlation of the structure-activity relationship by qualitative (SAR) and quantitative (QSAR and 3D-QSAR) mean;
- molecular modeling to establish steric and structural requirements for activity in CNS and other biological targets;
- modeling of the receptor proteins (transmembrane receptors and enzymes), their active domains and interactions with selective and potential ligands (docking);
- search for new methods for analyzing and investigation of the positive and negative modulation of the receptor proteins by non-classical allosteric interactions.
