The research projects of the Laboratory are following:

1. Analysis of molecular basis of chronic renal failure.
2. Molecular genetics of cardiovascular diseases.
3. Identification and role of molecular variants of genes  in the development and progression of type 2 diabetes and its microvascular complications.
4. Predictive value of molecular variants of the genes in  multifactorial diseases.

The main purpose of these studies is creating genetic profile of susceptibility to the development of chronic renal disease, type 2 diabetes and its serious complications, and cardiovascular diseases. This will allow early identification of individuals with a high risk of disease development and individualization of predictive and therapeutic  strategies.

Laboratory is collaborating with the Departments of Cardiology and Neurology in the project of studies on molecular pathology of cardiovascular diseases in type 2 diabetes patients. It is also collaborating with two research centers in the United States :

1. Neurobiology, Neurodegeneration & Repair Laboratory, National Institutes of Health, Bethesda, MD. This is a collaboration on the studies on the – identification and role of molecular variants of genes in the development and progression of type 2 diabetes and its microvascular complications. The main trend of these studies is identification of novel genes involved in the pathogenesis of type 2 diabetes through the analysis of the whole human genome, GWAS (Genome-wide Association Study).
2. Department of Ophthalmology, Harvard Medical School, Massachusetts Eye and Ear Infirmary, Boston, MA. Collaboration in the Project CARe (Candidate Gene Association Resource) involves the investigation of the gene involvement in diabetic retinopathy in type 2 diabetes.
